The WV Series originated from the desire to generate the greatest possible number of images from a single matrix. This matrix is the window vision self-adhesive vinyl — a micro-perforated material commonly used in advertising — which allows me to construct line through the continuity of points. The drawings are initially formed by filling the perforations of the surface, either partially or completely, using different pens and pencils that simultaneously produce subtle tonal variations.
Working from the same matrix inherently leads me to establish a series of self-imposed constraints through which to inhabit the plane. These constraints become the rules governing each composition within the limits of the chosen surface. One exercise, for instance, may involve filling every fifth perforation in only three directions; another may extend the same operation across all possible directions. In the same manner, decisions arise regarding whether a composition will develop symmetrically or asymmetrically. In certain works, the material is later removed entirely, leaving only the marked points visible, which are then connected through lines according to newly established systems and rules.
The research developed through the WV Series expands towards the notion that the micro may offer a way of understanding and visualising the macro. The microscopic remains within our grasp as a means of seeking answers about the physical world and its phenomena, just as nature, in its smallest manifestations, has served as a fundamental field of study through which science continues to deepen its understanding of the universe.
