ANTEDISTANTE, 2014.

GALERÍA TAJAMAR SANTIAGO, CHILE.

SELF-ADHESIVE VINYL WINDOW VISION, WOOD PANELS.

VARIABLE DIMENSIONS

“Each medium is vibratory, that is, a block of space-time constituted by the periodic repetition of its component. Thus, the living has an external medium that refers to materials; an internal medium that refers to component elements and compound substances; an intermediary medium that refers to membranes and boundaries; an annexed medium that refers to energy sources and perceptions-actions. Each medium is coded, and a code is defined by periodic repetition; but each code is in a perpetual state of transcoding or transduction.”

(Ritornelo, G. Deleuze)

Galería Tajamar is situated within the urban landscape, granting it a sculptural and architectural presence that actively intervenes in the city, rather than functioning merely as a container for the exhibition of artworks. It is from this perspective that ANTEDISTANTE seeks to enter into dialogue with both the viewer and its surroundings, transforming perception itself into a vibratory medium through the relationship between distance and movement.

ANTEDISTANTE is constructed through the layered superposition of micro-perforated adhesive vinyl at varying distances, generating an effect of optical movement. To achieve this, the vinyl is installed across the entire glass surface from inside the gallery, leaving the black adhesive side visible from the exterior. In addition, six wooden panels — one for each glass wall — are constructed and likewise covered with the vinyl, though with the white surface exposed outward. In order for the optical movement to emerge, a minimum distance of ten centimetres between the panels and the glass walls is required.

As a result, distance exists not only between both surfaces, but also through the natural distance established between the viewer and the gallery itself. The optical effect is therefore directly connected to the dialogue that unfolds between the viewer and ANTEDISTANTE through the act of moving around and encountering the work.
